Leona Lewis Says Animals Matter To Her in A New Charity Film for the World Society For the Protection of Animals (WSPA)

Q & A with Leona Lewis

1. Do you have any animals?

We have a family dog called Misty. My brother rescued her from an owner who was mistreating her and didn’t want her any more. We’ve had her for about four years and she is a lovely, loyal dog and a great companion – such a happy dog now.

2. Why do you support the World Society for the Protection of Animals?

I’m a big animal lover and I think the work that WSPA does is amazing. I’ve always been a huge advocate for charities that protect animals, particularly WSPA because I agree with the way that they approach things.

I wanted to get involved with them because they run great campaigns; trying to push animal welfare laws and change things permanently, for the better, which I think is amazing. I’m looking forward to helping them build as much awareness for animals as possible.

5. Tell us about this WSPA campaign you are supporting?

I’m showing my support for WSPA’s campaign to get a Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare. Right now, there are no international laws to protect animals and they are working to change that.

All you have to do is sign a petition – I’ve done it and I’m encouraging people to sign it and send it to a friend as well. The Universal Declaration will mean so much worldwide; it could be the start of tougher laws to protect animals around the world. 3. How did you first hear about WSPA?

I heard about WSPA a few years ago and since then I’ve become a huge supporter. I’m signed up to their newsletters and I sign their petitions, which I forward on to my friends to sign. I also donate to their appeals, which could be anything from building bear sanctuaries to sending in teams to save animals after a disaster. I heard that WSPA had teams in Samoa, Indonesia and the Philippines, working to save all kinds of animals after the recent tsunami and earthquakes.

4. Which animal welfare issue (that WSPA works on) affects you the most?

I think that all of their work is important, but I really feel the laws they are trying to put into place will help animals around the world, which is what needs to happen. That’s why I’m supporting the Universal Declaration – it has massive potential to make so many bad situations better for animals. But WSPA has so many projects from bear dancing to the orangutan sanctuary they fund in Borneo – what WSPA does for animals is amazing.

5. Have you ever witnessed animal suffering/cruelty on your travels or in the UK? If so, what did you do about it?

I‘ve seen things that I would definitely consider to be neglect. One place I visited, I thought the horses looked malnourished – I’m very into horses so I know what a healthy horse should look like. Basic things weren’t taken care of, like the fact the horses didn’t have any water to drink in their field.  I’ve also seen so many stray dogs in some countries and it just breaks my heart.

But having being a WSPA supporter for years, I knew what to do about it. I reported it to the authorities and if I saw something like that again, I would probably write to my government to say that I wouldn’t visit that country again if I saw acts of animal cruelty. As a tourist, refusing to spend our money in a particular country for ethical reasons is one of the most powerful things we can do.

6. If you could change one thing for animals now, what would that be?

If I could change anything for animals it would be that they could get the same consideration and respect that we do, which is what the international declaration is working towards

ANGIE STONE EXPECTS THE ‘UNEXPECTED’ ON NOVEMBER 24

R&B Star’s New Album is 2nd for Legendary Soul Label Stax Records

R&B/soul luminary Angie Stone has never shied away from pushing her own limits and the limits of her music. With each new recording, with each next step in her career, she has consistently hit the world with something it didn’t see coming. Her new album, Unexpected, set for release on November 24th from Stax Records (a division of Concord Music Group), encompasses a diversity of styles and influences that Stone has distilled over the years – rap, R&B, soul, funk and more – and weaves them together in a narrative that addresses life’s ups and downs, but ultimately strikes a redemptive chord.

“I wanted this album to be something different,” says Stone, whose 2007 Stax debut, The Art of Love & War, was her first album to top Billboard’s R&B/hip-hop chart. “I didn’t want to make the kind of neo-soul record I had made in the past. That would have been repetitive.”

But in the midst of mapping this new direction, Stone encountered a shock that even she didn’t see coming. Mid-way through the recording process, her father – Stone’s spiritual anchor and creative mentor since her childhood in South Carolina – passed away very suddenly. “It was totally unexpected,” she says, “and that’s where I came up with the title of the album. I really didn’t think I could finish the project, because I was so grief stricken…I had to do a lot of the vocals a second time. I had to lean on my dad’s wisdom and energy, and try to be open to what he would have wanted me to do in order to finish the songs. I can say that his spirit was literally there in the studio with me, and I’m grateful for that.”

Out of this tragedy comes Unexpected, the next step forward for Stone, a stretch beyond whatever limits – real or perceived – she might have been facing when the project began. From the get-go, the quick and funky title track – with its backbeat inspired by Sly Stone’s 1971 hit, “Family Affair” – warns the listener to “Prepare yourself for just about anything.” Equally energetic is the album’s first single, “I Ain’t Hearin’ U,” a song that decries rumor and gossip. The track is co-written by vocalist and songwriter Juanita Wynn, Stone’s collaborative partner for several years.

“I Don’t Care” is a proclamation of self-acceptance and self-assurance, based on sound spiritual advice that Stone received early on: “My dad always used to tell me, ‘Don’t worry about what people say. They can’t change anything. Whatever God wants for you is most important.” “Tell Me” settles into a techno groove wherein the dual vocals by Stone and Wynn – artfully co-produced by Kerrim “Ikon” King and Fitzroy “Art Teacher” Reid – create a wall of sound that’s augmented by an edgy delivery from rapper Dose.

“Think Sometimes” is a poignant ballad inspired in large part by Stone’s late father. “It’s funny how people can slip away so fast, and suddenly they’re in your past,” she says. “You wonder about what you could have – or should have – done differently. It’ll make you think sometimes.”

Unexpected represents a turning point for Angie Stone – not just in her career, but in her life and her world view. And while the losses that triggered the transformation may be painful, the artist and her work are stronger because of them. “This album is something that no one would have anticipated coming from me. My father always encouraged me and everyone else he knew to reach out and make a leap of faith, and that’s exactly what I’ve done.”

How would you categorize your music?

I like to call my music So Cal Brazilian Jazz. However, there are critics out there who have really gotten their knickers in a twist over how to categorize my music. Mostly they have said it’s not this or that or the other. And one critic has called us a Bossa Nova combo. That’s pretty silly because Bossa Nova is only one of the Latin rhythms we play. We play jazz influenced, Latin rhythmed music. And I sing. So whatever that is, is what it is.

If my life were a reality show what would it be called?

“Never a Dull Moment with Irene” or “Irene’s Crazy Life”

What was the last good movie you saw?

“Julie & Julia”

Pick three songs and tell me about them.

“Tintim Por Tintim” by João Gilberto.

I found this song on a João Gilberto album and was just enchanted by the tune. Of course he was singing in Portuguese so I asked my guitar player, Marco Tulio to tell me what it was about. He gave me a rough translation and it sounded like kind of cute, funny, lyrics. However, the original version has only one verse repeated three times. I found myself getting lost when I’d sing it and get confused if I was on the second or third repeat. To solve that problem I decided to write a verse in English for the middle. I took my understanding of the words and wrote a new verse. It wasn’t until much later that I discovered that Marco’s translation was a bit off the mark. The Portuguese lyrics are actually a very gentle sort of break-up song. My lyrics have kind of that na-na-na-na-na attitude. But mine also has a bit of humor to it. So I decided to keep it as written. It’s one of my favorite songs on the CD. I dedicate my verse to all those people who’ve had a bad relationship end and wish they could have had the last word.

I wrote the music for this song with Alex Varden with the only idea of what is was about being: “I miss you.” Once we got the music in a usable state, I started writing the lyrics. As I was listening to our scratch track of the melody the idea came to mind of what it would be like to be waiting for a soldier stationed overseas. I kept thinking how I would feel if it were me waiting for someone. I did my best to put the emotions surrounding that situation into words.

Scott Martin wrote the music and sent me a scratch track of the melody. I listened to it over and over again while there was a bunch of guys jack-hammering on my back patio. Somehow through all that racket the image of two people dancing came into my mind. I had been watching “Dancing With The Stars” and on the previous episode they were doing some particularly steamy rumbas. The words just started flowing and I wrote it down. I was surprised I was capable of writing such romantic lyrics because I’m such a practical down to earth sort of person. But there you have it. I’ve got an inner Lolita

SYNOPSIS

Emboldened by the return of Lord Voldemort, the Death Eaters are wreaking havoc in both the Muggle and wizarding worlds and Hogwarts is no longer the safe haven it once was. Harry suspects that new dangers may lie within the castle, but Dumbledore is more intent upon preparing him for the final battle that he knows is fast approaching. He needs Harry to help him uncover a vital key to unlocking Voldemort’s defenses–critical information known only to Hogwarts’ former Potions Professor, Horace Slughorn. With that in mind, Dumbledore manipulates his old colleague into returning to his previous post with promises of more money, a bigger office…and the chance to teach the famous Harry Potter.

Meanwhile, the students are under attack from a very different adversary as teenage hormones rage across the ramparts. Harry’s long friendship with Ginny Weasley is growing into something deeper, but standing in the way is Ginny’s boyfriend, Dean Thomas, not to mention her big brother Ron. But Ron’s got romantic entanglements of his own to worry about, with Lavender Brown lavishing her affections on him, leaving Hermione simmering with jealousy yet determined not to show her feelings. The eight stars/housemates of “Drawn Together” represent iconic archetypes from the world of animation and include: “Captain Hero,” a not-so-moral do-gooder reminiscent of the Saturday morning TV super heroes of the 70’s; “Clara,” a 20-year-old sweet and naive fairy-tale princess; “Toot Braunstein,” a black-and-white pudgy heart throb from the 20’s; “Foxxy Love,” a sexy mystery-solving musician; “Spanky Ham,” a foul-mouthed Internet download pig; “Ling-Ling,” an adorable Asian trading card mini-monster; “Wooldoor Sockbat,” a wacky Saturday morning whatchamacallit; and “Xandir,” a strong, young gay video game warrior. The characters left their animated “reality” and entered a new world where their cartoon universes collide with a bang, combining different styles of animation and different personalities, all “drawn together.” This was COMEDY CENTRAL’s first original animated series that was drawn traditionally and in 2-D digital ink and paint animation.
