JoJo’s Journal – Mariah, Nick, Tina and More

May 16, 2008

Hey folks, what’s up.  Just stopping by for a minute to give my takeon whats going on in the entertainment world and beyond.  And remember, it’s MY take, everyone has an opinion.

I just don’t know what to say about Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon getting married!  Mariah is simply fabulous and rich, and Nick is a rich, nice-looking young man, but I see them as an incredibly odd pair.  It was quite sudden – only six weeks of dating – but all is fair in love.  And that’s what life is about isn’t it – taking chances and having fun while doing it.  Nick gave Mariah a 17-carat diamond ring worth $2.5 million, so young Nick ain’t no joke!  Will it last?  I hope so, but I think not.  Here’s to you Nick and Mariah!

After seven years out of the spotlight Tina Turner is set to tour again.  How great is that?!  Tina is well over 70 years old, but who cares!  As we saw on the Grammy’s, and recently on the Oprah Winfrey Show, Tina is as fabulous as ever!  Go to and look at the STUNNING photo of Ms. Turner – it is incredible!  We are all blessed that she decided to take her show on the road one more time.  You better believe I will be in the audience showing lots of love for the great Tina.  After all, she is a legend.

Now this surprised the hell out of me!  Legendary newswoman Barbara Walters has disclosed in her new book “Audition”, and to Oprah Winfrey, that she had an affair with MARRIED U.S. Sen. Edward Brooke in the 1970’s.  She waited more than 30 years to spill the beans.  Does she know how to keep a secret or what?!  I say I’m surprised because she has always carried herself like a “goodie, goodie” girl.  Just goes to show you that everyone likes a little hanky-panky every now and then.  Oh, I forgot to mention, he’s Black.  Jungle fever baby!  J

Also in Ms. Walters’ new book she disses Star Jones.  Needless to say, Star is furious!

Treach from Naughty By Nature was stopped recently in Newark, New Jersey for driving with a suspended license.  Dude was wearing a bullet-proof vest.  I know Newark is a rough place but do citizens have to walk around wearing bulletproof vests?  Have we reached that portal?  I used to love Naughty By Nature and had a huge crush on Treach.  I think he is fine as hell!  But who the f_____ is after him that he needs to wear a vest?  His ex-wife Pepa?

Creepy, creepy, creepy.  I just read that Suri Cruise, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’ toddler, gets a lot of hits online.  Why?!  Who the hell is Googling this child?  I know it can’t be kids her age because she’s two!  So, are you telling me that adults are searching her out?  Euuuuuu!   I find that strange.

Speaking of a little creepy.  R Kelly’s child pornography case may get underway soon.  He and his lawyers arrived in court on May 9 for jury selection.  Kelly’s lawyers have asked for another postponement so there may be no need to select a jury at this time.  One thing we know for sure — R. Kelly’s lawyers are geniuses in the art of postponing a trial.  Six years!

Big and scary Suge Knight got into an argument with some dude at Shag Nightclub in Hollywood on May 10 which witnesses say appeared to be friendly – at first.  But then it turned ugly when Suge shouted “I want my money!”  At which time Suge and his entourage rushed the guy and a fight broke-out.  When folks broke up the fight, the guy who was rushed, got up off of the ground, and proceeded to land a right-hook in Suge’s face knocking him out cold!  Most people would be scared to punch Suge Knight so I’m wondering who the hell is the guy?  Someone finally had the guts to do it!  I better not say anything too negative about Suge because… know…..he could have me rubbed out!  LOL!  But I have never viewed Suge as one of the good guys.  As big as his ass is he even had to be rushed to the hospital.  He has sent lots of people to the hospital so now he knows how it feels.  Of course, Suge refused to file a police report.

I went to the Kanye West Glow in the Dark Tour at Madison Square Garden in NYC on May 13, and even though I did not see Kanye’s set – I’ll get back to that – I had a great time.  Opening acts were Lupe Fiasco, N.E.R.D. featuring Pharrell and superstar on the rise, Rihanna.  Here’s my take on the show.

Opening the show was Chicago rapper Lupe Fiasco.  Of course I had already heard some of his stuff and seen a couple of videos and I just liked him.  But after seeing him live I now love him; he definitely has a new fan in me!  He not only performed rap, he also touched on jazz and R&B which showed his diversity.  He had a female back-up singer who had a nice voice but she was a wanna-be Keisha Cole.  Sorry doll.  Lupe also had a white dude backing him who sounded good but was a Robin Thicke wanna-be!  It’s all good though because Lupe’s set was smooth, even though he only did a 30 minute set, too short.  New York showed Lupe Fiasco a lot of love.  I would like to see his act again.

Following Lupe was N.E.R.D. featuring Pharrell Williams.  A writer from the LA Times wrote about Kanye’s Seattle show back in April and said that N.E.R.D featuring Pharrell Williams….proved musically charismatic. Williams is the band’s star, though he’s a rather delicate vocalist; like many rockers before him, he cashes in on charisma.”  I totally disagree with that assessment.   To me their set sounded like a bunch of noise.  A lot of Pharrell’s vocals were just mush; not audible.  And sorry to say I did not see the charisma that the LA Times writer speaks about!  I love rock music, and I did hear some guitar and drum licks that caught my attention, but overall it was not enough for me to say I enjoyed Pharrell’s show.  A bunch of folks jumping around the stage to a bunch of noise.  I was glad when they left the stage. Pharrell is a great producer.  Shouldn’t he just stick to that?  N.E.R.D. featuring Pharrell Williams don’t have to worry about me spending another dime to see them!

After an annoyingly long intermission, Rihanna took the stage.  And might I say she was a treat!  I love Rihanna but now I adore her!  I’m a Kanye fan but Rihanna is the reason I even came to the show.  Girlfriend did not disappoint.  First of all, Ri looked FANTASTIC!  She came out in all black wearing a full, floor-length tulle skirt with a gorgeous “new-wave” short jacket that had a hood which covered her head.  After a few minutes on the stage she removed the hood to reveal that perfect haircut and her face was flawless, as usual.  She opened with Nelly Furtado’s “Maneater”, which was very nice.  Then Ri ripped off her skirt to reveal looked-like-they-were-poured-on black leather pants and she put on a shiny red jacket that had breast cones and squared shoulders.  Very futuristic.  Then she did one of my favorite Rihanna songs, “Breakin’ Dishes”.  I was on my feet immediately!  She continued the party with “Pon De Replay”, “SOS,” and she covered M.I.A.’s “Paper Planes” and Lauryn Hill’s “Doo Wop (That Thing).”  Then she stopped for a moment and started talking to us about the song that really means a lot to her and how when she first heard it she just had to have it, and that song is “Umbrella”.   Ri started singing “Umbrella” and at this point she had the audience mesmerized – everyone was singing along.  And then all of a sudden, to our delight and surprise, Chris Brown joined Rihanna on stage to duet with her on “Umbrella”!  They sounded great!  The audience went crazy!  Yes, Rihanna did a nice show and I can’t wait to see her again.

Here is why I didn’t get to see the star of the show – Kanye.  This show was on a Tuesday night and even though it started on time, the intermissions between acts were shamelessly long.  Like most people, I work a job during the day and had to go to work the next day.  They started “building” Kanye’s stage at around 10:15.  They were still “building” that stage by 10:45 with no end in site.  Simply put – Kanye took too long to hit the stage.  We all thought he would be on no later than 10:00 p.m. because each opening act only performed for 30 minutes.   You know Kanye’s a diva and everything has to be just right.   J

Native New Yorker Mariah Carey is certainly a musical icon.  Born in Huntington, Long Island, New York, she is the third and youngest child of Patricia Hickey, a former opera singer and vocal coach of Irish descent, and Alfred Roy Carey, an aeronautical engineer of Afro-Venezuelan descent.  Mariah’s parents divorced when she was three years old and she was raised by her mom.  The story goes that Mariah’s mother Patricia was practicing Verdi’s opera Rigoletto in Italian when she heard her then three year old daughter imitating her.  That’s when Patricia started training her daughter to sing.  As a child Mariah spent a lot of her time at home alone, and turned to music to occupy herself.  Has that paid off big time!

Mariah made her recording debut in 1990 under the guidance of Columbia Records executive Tommy Mottola.  She met Tommy at a party where singer Brenda K. Starr gave Tommy Mariah’s demo tape.  (Mariah became a back-up singer for Brenda after Mariah moved from Long Island to New York City).  After Tommy left the party he played the tape and was impressed. He went back to find Mariah, but she had left.  It must have been a great tape because Tommy tracked her down and signed her to a recording contract. And although Mottola was twenty years Mariah’s senior, she married him in 1993.

Mariah became the first recording artist to have her first five singles top the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart. A series of hit records established her position as Columbia’s highest-selling act. And according to Billboard magazine, Mariah was the most successful artist of the 1990s in the United States.  That is saying something and talking loud!

In 1997 Mariah separated from Mottola.  At that time she introduced elements of hip hop into her work, to much initial success, but her popularity was in decline when she left Columbia in 2001.  The following year she was dropped by Virgin Records after a highly publicized emotional breakdown.  During this time she received poor reception to Glitter, her film and soundtrack project.  Mariah then signed a new recording contract with Island Records in 2002, and after a somewhat unsuccessful period, she returned to the top of pop music in 2005.  That year she put out her tenth studio album “The Emancipation of Mimi” which became 2005’s best-selling album in the U.S.

Mariah Carey’s hits, awards and accolades continued to grow.  She was named the best-selling female pop artist of the MILLENNIUM at the 2000 World Music Awards.  She has recorded the most number-one singles for a solo artist in the United States (eighteen) and according to the Recording Industry Association of America, she is the third best-selling female recording artist of all time.  In addition to her commercial accomplishments, Mariah has earned several Grammy Awards, and is well-known for her powerful vocal range.  Not only has she won Grammys, she has also won American Music Awards, Billboard awards, BMI awards, Soul Train Music Awards, World Music Awards…..the list goes on and on.

By spring 2007, Mariah had begun working on her eleventh studio album – E=MC².  Two weeks before the album’s release, on April 2, 2008, “Touch My Body” became Mariah’s eighteenth number-one single on the Hot 100, pushing her past Elvis Presley into second place for the most number-one singles among all artists in the rock era, according to Billboard magazine’s revised methodology.  Mariah is now second only to The Beatles who have twenty number-one singles.  On April 30, 2008, Ms. Carey married actor/rapper Nick Cannon, at her private estate on Windermere Island in the Bahamas.

Treated me kind
Sweet destiny
Carried me through desperation
To the one that was waiting for me
It took so long
Still I believed
Somehow the one that I needed
Would find me eventually

I had a vision of love
And it was all that you’ve given to me
