JoJo’s Journal – American Idol, Foxy Brown, Nas and more

May 23, 2008

Hey folks, what’s up.  Just stopping by for a minute to give my take on what’s going on in the entertainment world and beyond.  And remember, it’s MY take, everyone has an opinion.

Oh – have a great Memorial Day weekend!  Party!

~~~~~~~~~~~
For all the American Idol fans – hooray for David Cook!  He got 56% of the vote!  I’m glad he won instead of David Archuleta.  I think they are both excellent singers in very different ways.  My problem with “little” David is that strange look he gets in his eyes.  He reminds me of a kewpie doll!  Weird.  And the fact that he’s only 17 years old leaves him plenty of time for a career.  DA’s voice is actually superb – the tone and timber, his pronunciations – really fantastic.  He is a serious singer and very mature for his age.  I wonder how his father took the loss?  You know he is a real stage dad and apparently can be quite verbally/emotionally abusive to his son.  Little David will have a great career.  And may I suggest to David that once he makes his millions to move far, far away from your father.
David Cook is very entertaining.  I just love the raspyness of  his voice and that rock/soul sound that he brings forth.  I was personally moved by his raw emotions when he was announced the winner.  And how gracious was that when he stepped aside to show David Archuleta some love even though he was the winner?!  David Cook is a star!  It’s his time!  Here’s to you David – I hope you have a great career!
Many critics have panned the finale and the season overall, but I think it was a good show.  The top twelve opened with The TemptationsGet Ready with everyone wearing white.  They looked cute doing their little dance routine but will someone please teach Kristy Lee Cook some rhythm!  That girl cannot dance at all!
My favorite part of the show was the still fabulous Donna Summer!  We all know that people of color age better than anyone – barring serious illness.  But folks like Donna is an inspiration!  She is 59 years old and look how fantastic she looks and sounds!  The six female AI contestants opened Donna’s set with a medley of some of her biggest hits – She Works Hard for the Money, Hot Stuff, a bit of Bad Girls – and then the Disco Queen came out to her new song Stamp Your Feet.  I don’t like the song but it’s good she is out with new music.  Next Donna did her hit Last Dance as a duet with Syesha.    Syesha looked fly in that red!  The AI girls rocked!  And did you hear  Donna hit that last note perfectly?  Donna Summer is forever a queen in my heart.  Awesome.
Carrie Underwood – what can I say except she is one of the BEST entertainers in the business.  She sang her new song Last Name.  I loved her – she sounded great and looked fantastic!  Carrie was working that white outfit!  I say she is the most impressive American Idol winner yet and she certainly has the biggest career of any of the IA winners.  Even if espot/JoJo’s Journal readers don’t like country music you all should go out and buy Carrie Underwood’s latest CD – give her a listen and I bet you some money you’re going to become a fan.  I recently bought it and it’s very good.  I’m from the big city but I’m a country girl at heart.  J
I hadn’t heard Brian Adams music in a while so it was refreshing to hear him on AI.  He really didn’t need the AI guys backing him because they made his two songs sound too much like anthems. Also, the guy with the dreads had no business in the Top 10; his talent is small.  Don’t understand how he made it that far.
Who the hell is One Republic?  They sang their song “Apologize”.  That is a nice song!  Have you guys ever heard of One Republic?  When did they come out?  Anyhoo, David Archuleta sang it with them and as soon as David walked on stage the teenyboppers went crazy as usual.  Now I have to go and buy One Republic’s CD. I hope there is more than one good song on it.  I’ll let you know.
Season 6 winner Jordin Sparks sang her latest single One Step at a Time.  Jordin is fine and has a beautiful voice and her single with Chris Brown No Air is a big hit.  But I am just not into Jordin, which surprises me because overall I love her.  Not sure why I’m not feeling her music too much; maybe it’s too bubble gum for me.
And no need for us to cry for Syesha not winning AI.  Ms. Syesha has wasted no time and already has a duet out on iTunes with Boney James called “Gonna Get It”.  You might ask me “who the hell is Boney James?!”  And to that I would have to answer – I don’t know who the fuck that is!  LOL!!
Enough about American Idol.  The winner and the losers will have careers and I’m still trying to find one so fuck them.  J  Calm down – I’m just having fun!
Foxy Brown’s latest CD Brooklyn’s Don Diva was recently released – and she was recently released from jail after serving 8 months – but Ms. Foxy said she is not happy with the quality of the CD.  It was put together while she was incarcerated without her “stamp of approval”.  In June the CD will be re-released with five new songs on it.  I await with bated breath.  J
I’m disappointed but Nas has decided to not name his upcoming CD N**** as originally planned.  That sucks!  I was sooooooo looking forward to the controversy that would have created!  LOL!!  But ya’ll know damn well that very few record stores would sell a CD with that name on the cover.  Nas wants to make money like the rest of us so wisdom wins.  You know the saying – money talks and bullshit walks.
Now that cute ass Mario is done with Dancing With The Stars he is now back to doing his main gig – singing.  He will be one of the acts on the bill for The 12th Annual St. Kitts Music Festival from June 26 through June 28. Did you see DWTS the night Mario got booted off?  He was making the funniest faces trying to desperately hold back tears!  I was like you little punk – I know damn well you’re not going to cry on national television because you lost a dance contest!  LOL!!  Baby boy could dance though.
~~~~~~~~~~~

This is interesting.  Do ya’ll remember the singer Candi Staton who had a big hit with her song Young Hearts Run Free?  That is one of my favorite songs of my lifetime!  Well girlfriend has hit the Billboard dance charts with her latest collaboration with the British dance duo Groove Armada.  Who the hell are they?  The song is called “Love Sweet Sound” and it was number 10 on Billboard’s Hot Dance Airplay chart for three weeks.  You go Candi!  All these old ass singers coming back out hitting it big – I love it!

Is Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon still married?   I’m just wondering because you know it’s been a few days and……..well…..some folks said it would probably be annulled within 72 hours.  Still together, huh?  Okay.

ARTIST OF THE MONTH

MARIAH CAREY

~~~~~~~~~~~
 Native New Yorker Mariah Carey is certainly a musical icon.  Born in Huntington, Long Island, New York, she is the third and youngest child of Patricia Hickey, a former opera singer and vocal coach of Irish descent, and Alfred Roy Carey, an aeronautical engineer of Afro-Venezuelan descent.  Mariah’s parents divorced when she was three years old and she was raised by her mom.  The story goes that Mariah’s mother Patricia was practicing Verdi’s opera Rigoletto in Italian when she heard her then three year old daughter imitating her.  That’s when Patricia started training her daughter to sing.  As a child Mariah spent a lot of her time at home alone, and turned to music to occupy herself.  Has that paid off big time!
 Mariah made her recording debut in 1990 under the guidance of Columbia Records executive Tommy Mottola.  She met Tommy at a party where singer Brenda K. Starr gave Tommy Mariah’s demo tape.  (Mariah became a back-up singer for Brenda after Mariah moved from Long Island to New York City).  After Tommy left the party he played the tape and was impressed. He went back to find Mariah, but she had left.  It must have been a great tape because Tommy tracked her down and signed her to a recording contract. And although Mottola was twenty years Mariah’s senior, she married him in 1993.
 Mariah became the first recording artist to have her first five singles top the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart. A series of hit records established her position as Columbia’s highest-selling act. And according to Billboard magazine, Mariah was the most successful artist of the 1990s in the United States.  That is saying something and talking loud!
 In 1997 Mariah separated from Mottola.  At that time she introduced elements of hip hop into her work, to much initial success, but her popularity was in decline when she left Columbia in 2001.  The following year she was dropped by Virgin Records after a highly publicized emotional breakdown.  During this time she received poor reception to Glitter, her film and soundtrack project.  Mariah then signed a new recording contract with Island Records in 2002, and after a somewhat unsuccessful period, she returned to the top of pop music in 2005.  That year she put out her tenth studio album “The Emancipation of Mimi” which became 2005’s best-selling album in the U.S.
 Mariah Carey’s hits, awards and accolades continued to grow.  She was named the best-selling female pop artist of the MILLENNIUM at the 2000 World Music Awards.  She has recorded the most number-one singles for a solo artist in the United States (eighteen) and according to the Recording Industry Association of America, she is the third best-selling female recording artist of all time.  In addition to her commercial accomplishments, Mariah has earned several Grammy Awards, and is well-known for her powerful vocal range.  Not only has she won Grammys, she has also won American Music Awards, Billboard awards, BMI awards, Soul Train Music Awards, World Music Awards…..the list goes on and on.
 By spring 2007, Mariah had begun working on her eleventh studio album – E=MC².  Two weeks before the album’s release, on April 2, 2008, “Touch My Body” became Mariah’s eighteenth number-one single on the Hot 100, pushing her past Elvis Presley into second place for the most number-one singles among all artists in the rock era, according to Billboard magazine’s revised methodology.  Mariah is now second only to The Beatles who have twenty number-one singles.  On April 30, 2008, Ms. Carey married actor/rapper Nick Cannon, at her private estate on Windermere Island in the Bahamas.
 Mariah Carey – an American pop and R&B singer-songwriter, record producer, actress, icon and now wife.
Treated me kind
Sweet destiny
Carried me through desperation
To the one that was waiting for me
It took so long
Still I believed
Somehow the one that I needed
Would find me eventually
I had a vision of love
And it was all that you’ve given to me
