JoJo’s Journal – Tatum O’Neal, Jodie Foster, Eddie Griffin and More!

June 4, 2008

Hey folks, what’s up.  Just stopping by for a minute to give my take on what’s going on in the entertainment world and beyond.  And remember, it’s MY take, everyone has an opinion.

Actress and tennis great John McEnroy’s ex Tatum O’Neal was arrested Sunday (June 1) in New York City for buying crack-cocaine.  I don’t know…..I just have to say…. what an idiot!  I will never understand why people who are in the spotlight go out and buy drugs themselves!  Why not get a flunky to buy them for you!  How embarrassing for her two young-adult sons and her teenage daughter.   Sorry kids but your mom is a jerk!  This kind of stupidity just gets my dander up!  Tatum is charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance, which I believe is a misdemeanor.  And get this – Tatum told the police she was researching a role.  LOL!!  Now that is priceless!

Jodie Foster is not only a hugely successful actress and producer, and, until now, she has been successful at keeping her 14-year lesbian relationship very private.  Of course, I always suspected she was gay but never saw it confirmed. Jodie and her long-time lover Cydney Bernard (not a very attractive chick I might add L) have two children together that Jodie conceived via a sperm donor.  Well, now Jodie has left Cydney for a new girlfriend and Hollywood folks are wondering if Jodie is going through a mid-life crisis.  I’m just wondering – why do people care!

This is sooooo funny!  Comedian/actor Eddie Griffin was in the middle of a show when a process server stepped to the side of the stage and served him with a subpoena!  Daag!  The dude could have waited until Eddie finished his show!  Eddie asked what it was, dude told him you’ve been served, Eddie said “I’m not picking it up, so I’m not served!”  You can watch the footage on tmz.com.

As you know, one of Fifty Cent’s homes recently burnt down to the ground.  His ex-girlfriend Shaniqua, the mother of his son Marquis, lived in the house with their son and her boyfriend.  Did you see this chick ranting and raving to the press that she believes Fifty did it and that he is obsessed with her?!  Lets stop right here for a minute – Fifty is no prize in the looks department but why would he be obsessed with her? Girlfriend is raggedy as hell!  Anyhow, Fifty is in litigation in an attempt to get her evicted from the home.  That’s shameful on his behalf because they were together for quite some time and had a child when he wasn’t the rich superstar he is today.  It wasn’t that long ago that Fifty was an ugly troll building his career.  Since he is so wealthy why can’t Mr. Moneybags give her a home for her and their son?  Another Black man not wanting to do the right thing for a Black woman.  L

It looks like we won’t be hearing any new music from Amy Winehouse for a while.  She is just in one mess after another.  But at least her mom is doing what she is supposed to do – stick by her daughter’s side.  Janice Winehouse recently told the British newspaper Daily Mail that she is confident her daughter will one day resurrect her career and she believes her daughter’s craving for “constant drama” led to her drug addiction.  She also said, “Amy is a girl who lives on the edge; she toys with it. But she has an awareness of it too – and that will save her in the end.”  I hope Janice is correct.  You all know how much I love me some Amy Winehouse!  Just say no to drugs girlfriend!  Or, just go and smoke a good blunt and call it a day.  J

Just a tidbit.  I used to be a BIG Wendy Williams fan – a true “Wendyneista”.  But those days are over.  I just want to ask – why is she still on the air?  Can somebody please tell me.  And she now has a talk show on Fox!  I ain’t mad at her for making that money.

Check out the June issue of Essence magazine.  There are three different covers – one cover has Mary J. Blige, another has Jill Scott and one has Alicia Keys – with accompanying interviews.  Isn’t that fantastic?! I bought the one with Mary J. on the cover because of the three she is my favorite.  And, of course, all three talented women look beautiful.

~~~~~~~~~~~~
My God.  Have you seen the recent photos of pregnant Lisa Marie Presley?  This is what I want to know.  What the hell do you have to eat in order to get that freaking huge in such a short period of time?!  That’s ridiculous to gain that much weight during one’s pregnancy!  She looks like a damn blimp!
~~~~~~~~~~~~

In contrast to that whale Lisa Marie – just joking around! – check out Angelina Jolie on the cover of the July issue of Vanity Fair.  Stunning!

Sad news.  L  Rapper and host of Pimp My Ride Xzibit lost his newborn son Xavier on Monday May 26.  The baby was born prematurely on May 15 but had problems with his lungs.  Unfortunately, baby boy didn’t make it.  It is always hard to lose a child.  Lets all send out heartfelt condolences to Xzibit and the baby’s mom.  This has got to be a very tough time for them.

The world is a bit sadder today because one of the pioneering greats of rock n’ roll passed away – and that great is BO DIDDLEY.  He was 79 years old and his heart just could not make it to 80.  Most of the great musicians who created the music that we all hear today are gone – Bo was one of the very few left.  He was especially known for that square guitar , those dark glasses and that signature hat.  One of his biggest hits was “I’m A Man”, which was copied by The Stones and The Yardbirds back in the day.  Thank you Bo Diddley for sharing your vision and talent with the world.  Rest in peace.

ARTIST OF THE MONTH

BEYONCÉ KNOWLES

~~~~~~~~~~~
Every now and then God plants among us someone special who shines brighter than everyone else.  That’s how I think of June’s Artist of Month, superstar Beyoncé Knowles.  Ms. B, as we fans affectionately refer to her, is not your average R&B-pop singer – oh no, far from it.  She is an extraordinary entertainer who sings, dances, writes, produces, acts and designs clothing and continues to look gorgeous while doing it all.  She is certainly a rare breed.
Beyoncé Giselle Knowles was born September 4, 1981 to  Mathew Knowles, a successful African American record manager and Tina Beyoncé, an American costume designer and hair stylist of Louisiana Creole descent. Knowles was baptized after her mother’s maiden name, as a tribute to her mother and to prevent the name from becoming obsolete, since only a few of the Beyoncé males carry the name.  Her maternal grandparents, Lumis Albert Beyoncé and Agnéz Deréon, were French-speaking Louisiana Creoles.  She is the older sister of Solange Knowles, a singer-songwriter and actress.
As a child Beyoncé studied dance including ballet, jazz and tap.  Rumor has it that her singing ability was discovered by her dance instructor who was humming a song and Beyoncé finished it hitting all the high notes.  She was a shy child but came alive when she hit the stage.  By age seven, Beyoncé had entered her first talent show, singing John Lennon’s “Imagine”. She won the contest and was honored with a standing ovation.  A seven year old child wowing folks.  Isn’t that something!  She attended Parker Elementary School, a music magnate school in Houston, where she performed with the school’s choir and she also attended the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Houston.  And, like most good Black singers, Beyoncé was a soloist in the choir of her church, St. John’s United Methodist Church.  But she only lasted in the choir for two years because she was focused on her budding career.  At the age of eight, Beyoncé met LaTavia Roberson while in an audition for a girl group. They, along with Knowles’ cousin Kelly Rowland were placed into a group that performed rap and dancing named Girl’s Tyme.  With Knowles and Rowland, Girl’s Time attracted audiences nationally. Arne Frager, a west coast R&B producer, flew into Houston to see them. He eventually brought them to his studio—The Plant Recording Studios—in Northern California, with Beyoncé’s vocals being featured because Frager thought she had personality and the ability to sing.  As part of his efforts to sign Girl’s Time to a major label record deal, Frager’s strategy was to debut them in Star Search,  the precursor to American Idol.  They lost the competition because the song they performed was not good, as Beyoncé herself admitted.  Beyoncé had her first “professional setback” after that defeat, but regained confidence after knowing that then-pop stars Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake had also experienced the same fate.
To fast forward, in 1995 Beyoncé’s dad, Mathew Knowles, resigned from his job as  a medical-equipment salesman in order to manage his daughter’s career.  He dedicated his time and established a “boot camp” for the group’s training.  The move reduced the Knowles family’s income by half and Beyoncé’s parents separated because of the pressure.  Rehearsing in Tina’s salon and their backyards, the group continued performing as an opening act for other established R&B girl groups of the time; Tina contributed to the cause by designing their costumes, which she continued to do throughout Destiny’s Child era. With the continued support of Mathew, they auditioned before record labels and were finally signed to Elektra Records, only to be dropped months later before they could release an album.
Taken from a passage in the Book of Isaiah, the group changed its name to Destiny’s Child in 1993.  They performed in local events and, after four years on the road, the group was signed to Columbia Records in late 1997. That same year, Destiny’s Child recorded their major label debut song, “Killing Time”, for the soundtrack to the 1997 film, Men in Black.  The following year, the group released its self-titled debut album, scoring their first major hit “No, No, No”. That album established the group as a viable act in the music industry, amassing moderate sales and winning awards.  However, the group rose to bona fide stardom after releasing their multi-platinum sophomore album “The Writing’s on the Wall” in 1999. “The Writing’s on the Wall” sold more than seven million copies, essentially becoming their breakthrough album.
In June 2003, after a series of commercial successes with the group, Beyoncé released her debut solo album, “Dangerously in Love”. The album became one of the most successful albums of that year, spawning the number-one singles “Crazy in Love” and “Baby Boy”, and earned Knowles FIVE Grammy Awards in a single night in 2004. The formal disbandment of Destiny’s Child in 2005 facilitated her continued success as a solo artist. She released her second album, B’Day in 2006, which spawned the UK number-one singles “Déjà Vu” and “Beautiful Liar”, as well as the worldwide hit, “Irreplaceable”.
The success of her solo albums has established her as one of the most marketable artists in the industry. However, she has also added acting and endorsement deals to her repertoire. In 2006, she starred alongside Steve Martin and Kevin Kline in the comedy The Pink Panther, and that same year, scored the main role in the film adaptation of the 1981 Broadway musical Dreamgirls. Beyoncé launched her family’s fashion line House of Deréon in 2004, and among her many lucrative commercial deals are Pepsi, Tommy Hilfiger, and L’Oréal. Ms. B has been with long-time boyfriend Jay-Z since 2002, though they were very discreet about their relationship. After much speculation, they married on April 4, 2008.
At the age of 27 Beyoncé Giselle Knowles is at the beginning of what is more than likely going to be a very long and rewarding career.  With all that she has already accomplished, what is she going to do next?  Whatever she does I know it’s going to be spectacular!
